What is the difference between a papillon and a long hair chihuahua?

I have a papillon who gets confused for a chihuahua mostly because of lack of hair around her ears like other papillons have.What is the difference between a papillon and a long hair chihuahua?

The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world and was named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. Chihuahuas are graceful, alert, swift-moving little dogs with a saucy expression. There are two distinct breed types, one with a long coat of soft texture, the other with a short coat. Identical otherwise, both can be whelped in the same litter. They have round apple-heads, large protruding eyes and a short, stout muzzle. Their bodies are slightly longer than they are tall, and ears are large and flaring. Although their bodies are fairly evenly-muscled, their bones are prone to injury due to their fragility. In the past they may have been considered rodents by their ancestral owners, who may have raised them for food! Now adored for their small size, the Chihuahua is a bright eyed, dainty dog who is perfect for apartment living. They do better with indoor living than outdoor living. Puppies are so small they can fit in your hand easily. Most breeders recommend adopting a Chihuahua puppy between the ages of 4 - 12 months as they will be more mature and agile and not so apt for injury

not much i don't believe. i was on a website one day and i think it said that a short hair and papillon were mixed to get the long haired. i could be wrong, its happened before, but i believe thats what it said. so that could be why they look so similar.
Well.. Chihuahua's and Papillions are two different breeds. Therefore, their personalities are different, and everything else..
I think people are getting your Pap confused with a Chi because they've never seen a long hair Chi and a Pap side by side. If you had both to walk, I bet everyone would see the difference.





I think it's easier to show the difference with pictures rather than quoting the standard. So, I found some pics to show the difference clearly. I used a sable long coat Chi and a sable Papillon that doesn't have fringe. Even without the fringe you can see the difference between the breeds:

As you can see, the Chi has an apple or domed head and very short muzzle. The ears are much smaller and pointier. The Papillon has a more ';dog-like'; head where nothing is really exaggerated except the ears, which are big and rounded.





The body is also different. Chis are stockier. Papillons are taller but more refined (thinner) in bone.





Personality wise they are also very different. Papillons aren't lap dogs. They are sportier and are well suited for a more adventurous home. They love agility and training. The Papillon is really known for being very versatile and athletic.
They can look slightly similar, but they are a completely different breed.

They do look rather similar. Papillons aren't as well known as long haired chihuahuas so most people will see one and mistake it for a chihuahua. Papillons are just slightly larger and have longer hair then a long haired chihuahua.
THey look similor but Papillions have more hair then long haired chihuahua, it doesnt matter, because both dogs are so cute!!!
Papillions usually have longer coats and are a little larger. I have 2 long coat Chi's and a lot of people think she is a Pap, but she is pure bred Chi. A lot of people don't seem to even know there are such things as long coat Chi's where I live.
