How can I make my fine, long hair look good without cutting it?

I have a hairdresser's appointment next month, but until then I have to try and make my hair look descent without cutting it. My hair is about shoulder length, thick, fine, and does not hold a curl at all. I got side-bangs a while ago, but they've grown down to about my lip. When I tie my hair back in a ponytail, I look bald, but when I leave it down it just turns into a mop. Anyone know a quick solution to fixing my hair? Try brushing it back but rather thabb tieing it into a pony tail leave it and hold the style in place with plenty of hair spray or a hair band. Good luck
